OU Backstory: Series Synopsis, Movie Synopsis, and Character Entry

Raphael first started life as a tiny turtle living in the laboratory of the Warring Warrior Scientist, the Yōkai Baron Draxum, in a Hidden City deep under New York. Since he was so young, he and his brothers were blissfully unaware that they were being used for an experiment which involved combining their DNA with the DNA of their adopted father, Lou Jitsu (AKA Yoshi Hamato), a famous martial arts movie star and champion of Big Mama's Battle Nexus fighting arena. The success of the fusion meant Draxum was a step closer to having a mutant army to protect the Yōkai undercity against humanity, but with the sudden destruction of the laboratory and Lou Jitsu's escape with the turtles in two, things ground to a halt. Instead of being a super soldier, Raphael now lived with Lou Jitsu underground in New York City's sewers, (partially) raised on old martial arts movies, Jupiter Jim comics, and whatever else held his attention growing up. This includes crashing the Draxum's laboratory again to rescue a small dog thingy, 'borrowing' some sweet mystic weapons and tapping into their energy on impulse, and accidentally unleashing the ooze-quitoes Draxum was going to threaten New York City with.

If anyone knows Raphael, they know he is very gung-ho about the hero-ing business. As the self-appointed leader of the Mad Dogs, he tends to take his role as seriously as he possibly can at his age. He's a very big, very determined fellow who focuses more on being the brawn than the brains of the squad. Whenever he does try to come up with a plan, it either comes far from left field or, more frequently, devolves into being resolved by smashing everything with his fists. Over the course of time (within the series), he learns from his mistakes, gets better at coming up with ideas, and gradually works out solid strategies aside from smashing everything, which allows his brothers and himself more room to use their abilities whenever they come into play.

Raph can hang with his brothers, goofing off, chilling, and doing whatever it is teenagers do. Being the eldest can be tough, however; while they can tolerate his love for team-building and be cooperative enough to carry out his half-baked plans, Raph has his fair share of trouble trying to rein them in to focus on what they need to be doing as heroes for the greater good. The reason behind his frustration is mostly due to him taking on a more caretaking role for his brothers to make sure they're safe and protected. His patronizing and smothering has bitten him in the butt in terms of getting sass and no results in return. It only increases the worry that they won't be able to fend for themselves if there ever was a situation where he isn't able to make those decisions for them. Fortunately, he still learns from these setbacks, and he and his brothers make amends once he admits he (or they) is in the wrong. Despite worrying about his family's well-being, the burden of responsibility eventually lifts off of his shoulders when he comes to learn that they are all very capable of taking care of themselves, that he doesn't always need to know the answers as a leader, and that he is never alone. He can trust they will be there for him when he needs them the most.

As much as he loves doing good and fighting the bad guys, he has learned there is a huge difference between the usual rogue gallery and the major threats that seemingly come out of nowhere. That, and having a crash course on Splinter/Lou Jitsu/Yoshi Hamato's extensive family history and martial art training isn't very fun. Then again, Raphael always looks forward to a challenge. For instance, trying to keep the Foot Clan from finding all of the pieces of the Kuroi Yoroi (dark armor) and reviving the Shredder proved to be a challenge and struck him and his family on a personal level when they found out they were all technically related. After almost losing everything he knows, he is reminded that he is not alone. The power of his family - the Hamato Ninpō - flows through him. He also reminds his father of this; when the entire family join forces to take down the armored creature during the final battle, they are victorious, freeing the ancestral spirit that was locked away within its confines.

Later on, another threat arises when the Foot Clan make a resurgence once they get their hands on an ancient artifact. When an ally from the future tries to warn them of an invasion that occurs in the present, Raphael is the first to see that the timeline of events hasn't happened just yet. Unfortunately, the advantage doesn't last for very long, and the Foot Clan use the artifact to open a portal to another dimension, summoning an alien race known as the Krang into their world. Raph and the others soon learn that their foes are not what they seem; the Krang thrash them badly and seal their mystic powers, heavily injuring Splinter to the point where Raph calls for a strategic retreat. He uses himself as a shield in two instances during this fight: the first in order to protect his younger brothers, Donnie and Mikey, just as they all lose their powers; and after Leo steals the artifact, he throws himself in front of him, taking a blow from the Krang before sending Leo out in his personalized Donnie Pod. He then becomes a prisoner in the tendrils of the Krang, forced to give up information on the whereabouts of his home is before being completely mind controlled to do the Krang's bidding. It takes time and Leo's pleading to get through to him, bringing him back from his zombified state of mind just in time to regain their powers and fight back.

+ 5 Corsair Interview Questions

Why do you wish to join the Crimson Corsairs?

Raph's job is to help an' protect those in need of protecting. The Crimson Corsairs are also in the business of protecting people. So, in a way, our goals are aligning! Yeah? [He grins, pumping his arm for emphasis.] Yeah! We're heroes, that's what we are!

Why should the Crimson Corsairs allow you to join them?

Honestly speaking, we need more help. More muscle. Raph can provide both and then some. I don't just train for the fun of it - well, actually, I do. But what I mean is, what good's my training if I'm not applying it to a cause that needs attention?

Have you ever lost a comrade? How did you react?

[His previous exuberance evaporates, turning his gaze downward as a heavy silence now weighs upon his broad shoulders. The question clearly bothers Raphael, but he eventually gets around to answering the question.]

...Twice. An' for the record, that's one too many times.

The first one happened too quickly to our gram- ...a relative of ours. Can't really explain how that felt in the moment, even if I barely knew who she was when we first met her. There was too much goin' on an the Shredder wasn't intent on letting us off easy.

It was hard. I had to keep my brothers alive an' get us to safety. I didn't want to leave anyone behind. None of us did.

[Another long pause takes hold. This time, he looks up, his mouth a firm line before he speaks.]

Then I almost lost my brother. I didn't know what he was planning on doing until the very last minute. An' I felt...helpless. Like I couldn't do anything, bein' so far away.

If it wasn't for Mikey, things would've been a lot worse. But I know it's something I don't ever wanna experience again any time soon.

Many Crimson Corsairs will die in the line of duty, how does that make you feel?

Uh...not good. Because dying's not cool. An' I'd like it if Corsairs didn't die, but...guess if the stakes are really high, surviving an encounter seems slim. Look, if Raph can help it, he's gonna make sure no one dies on his watch.

How well do you work with comrades? What can we expect from you when you are placed on a team?

I'm all for teamwork! I have a team! That's just natural!

Raph can function an' be hard-working on his own, but if I'm on a team, I'll make sure we can figure it out. Everyone gets a role to play, that's what teams are for! What good is a team if they can't work together like the cohesive unit they're supposed to be?
